Two Mobile police officers went above the call of duty and now a dog has them to thank.
Officers Paul Smitherman and Mark Eubanks were on patrol in West Mobile last week when they found a badly injured dog lying in a ditch.
"The night we brought the dog in it looked like he was taking his last breath," said Smitherman who wasn't sure whether the dog would live. "His tongue was hanging out the side of his mouth like he hadn't had anything to drink in a while," said Eubanks.
Instead of just driving away, the two officers stopped and rescued the animal. The officers say they used a beach towel to carefully lift the dog into their patrol car and took him to the Rehem Animal Clinic on Hillcrest Road.
"We didn't know picking him up how many bones were crushed or if he would just come out of a daze and attack us," said Smitherman. "But he didn't. He laid in the car and once he got in there and got warm he was up wagging his tail," he said.
The veterinarian treating the dog, who nurses named Yogi, says the animal was clearly hit by a car. But, thanks to the two officers who brought him in the dog will make a full recovery.
"He looks alot better than when he came in," said Dr. Jared Mitchell.
The officers are now looking for a home for the dog, and they're also looking for help with his medical bills, which Mitchell says have reached nearly $800.
