Prichard's mayor is calling for better security at one Mobile County high school after a student is stabbed on campus.
The stabbing happened around 11:15 Thursday morning in the courtyard at Blount High School.
A school spokesperson says a ninth grader, who was upset about a fight earlier in the morning, attacked a classmate.
Prichard Police tell News Five the knife was stolen from a Home Economics classroom.
Police say the injured student suffered from a laceration to his head. The 17-year-old student, whose name has not been released, was airlifted to the University of South Alabama Medical Center where he was treated and released.
The other student, whose name is also not being released, was taken into custody and could face a 2nd degree assault charge.
Blount High School was immediately put on lock down, but that did not stop parents from rushing to campus to pick up their kids.
"I ran every light and every stop sign to get here," said Rhonda Patton, who said she had to wait outside the school until the lock down was lifted. "They should have let us know something instead of just having us stand out there. When they finally did tell us what was going on it was chaos," she said.
The student accused in the attack will be taken to the Strickland Youth Center Friday morning for his first hearing.
