DEKALB, Ill. (AP) - The police chief at Northern Illinois
University says four people shot by a gunman in a lecture hall this
afternoon have died. As many as 14 other people were injured from
wounds or flying debris.
Witnesses say the gunman -- who was a student, but not at NIU, was dressed in
black and armed with a shotgun and two handguns The campus
is in DeKalb, about 65 miles west of Chicago.
The shooting happened at 3 p.m. in a geology class at a lecture
hall near the center of the campus. Witnesses say the gunman
stepped from being a screen and opened fire. Police say they have
no motive.
A spokeswoman for a hospital says it received 17 victims, all
with wounds from the shooting or flying debris. Another victim was
airlifted to another hospital.
All night classes are canceled and the 25,000-student campus
will be closed tomorrow.
The shooting was the fourth at a U.S. school within a week.
