DEKALB, Ill. (AP) - The suspect who opened fire on a class at
Northern Illinois University before committing suicide was
identified today as 27-year-old former NIU student Steven
Kazmierczak.
That's according to Florida authorities and a university source
familiar with the investigation.
Sheriff's officials in Polk County, Florida, say they were asked
to notify a Lakeland, Florida, resident named Robert Kazmierczak
that his son was the shooting suspect at NIU and that he was dead.
Illinois authorities haven't yet confirmed the suspect's
identity. But a university source told The Associated Press on
condition of anonymity that it is Steven Kazmierczak.
Yesterday's attack sent panicked students fleeing for the exits
before the gunman killed himself. The killer's motive still isn't
known.
