Dozens of people gather on the lawn to remember a woman who meant so much to them. Many on the block were honored to call her a part of their family.
“A good woman that didn't bother nobody that didn't deserve this,” says the victim’s niece, Tanjie Foster. She says her aunt, 59-year-old Bertha Philips, just celebrated a birthday. She was a social woman who loved to travel and have parties.
“I just hugged her Saturday,” says Tanjie. “She's sweet, give you anything you want, do anything for her nieces her nephews, her mamma everybody,” she says. Neighbors say the victim was stabbed near the corner of Main and Jessi streets just before 7 a.m. One woman, who asked not to be identified, says she heard the victim scream as she was being attacked on the street.
“I saw him with the knife in his hand,” says the woman. “After he stabbed her he ran to the house, ran back to his car and he left.” What's disturbing about this case is the time of day it happened. Neighbors say that while the woman was apparently being attacked a couple of kids were waiting for their school bus a few feet away and it's got some people scared.
“I mean I'm worried for my children because they saw all of it,” says the unidentified woman. “I mean it shouldn't happen again.” For now, family and friends are in mourning after a terrible Valentine's Day start. Police say the attack may have started as a domestic dispute.
