The Mobile Police Department was out before dawn this morning to make a big sweep in one neighborhood.
Police arrested 56 people with outstanding warrants during a warrant sweep at two public housing developments along Michigan Avenue. Special Police units served over 150 warrants from traffic tickets to felonies. They knocked on doors and windows, giving offenders an unexpected early morning wake up call.
"There are consequences to people's behavior and we're in charge with enforcement of these warrants and we take that seriously," said Nancy Johnson, a spokeswoman for the department. Johnson says the arrests could have been avoided if people would have taken advantage of an Amnesty Program they offered last June. "They could have taken care of these warrants without any penalty and paid them up," said Johnson.
But for now these suspects will have to face time behind bars and additional court fines.
