It's a familiar story that usually doesn't have a happy ending but maybe not in this case. Abandoned and left to die in Cantonment, the victim of a dog fight is making a remarkable recovery that's not the only unique twist to this story.
Don't let his looks fool you, this pit bull known as Nietche is doing just fine.
"He's doing really well he likes to eat, sleep, be petted, be held. He's doing really well. His wounds are healing very well just with some cleaning and some antibiotics," says Joann Wittchen a vet. tech. at Safe Harbor Animal Hospital.
Just a few days ago no one would have imagine Nietche would be doing as well as he is. Bloodied and abandoned he was found here and at the time no one knew if he would survive.
His wounds are very familiar to Wittchen, "All the little marks he has on him each is a puncture wound some are very superficial like these here some go all the way through his ear."
He may have been a bait dor or he may have been a fighter but for now Nietche is being treated as a rescued stray according to County Spokesperson Sonya Daniel, "Any information anyone has about his owner or any information about where he may have lived, anything like that we would urge folks to call at this point we treat it as a stray situation until we have enough information to track down an owner and begin an investigation."
Once they are in the system, pit bulls and other aggressive breeds are eventually put down, Nietche will be the exception says Daniel, "Once he is well enough to be released from the vet he will be turned over to the humane society and they will care for him."
Nietche is expected to make a full recovery.
A seven thousand dollar reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of whoever is responsible for Nietche's injuries and lack of care.
