MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A commission created by the Alabama
Legislature to review illegal immigration has recommended tougher
enforcement against violators, more help for businesses to identify
legal workers, and a comprehensive guest worker program.
The Joint Interim Patriotic Immigration Commission held hearings
across the state in recent weeks and then presented its
recommendations to the Legislature on Tuesday.
The recommendations also include getting a reliable system for
Alabama employers to verify that workers are legal, impounding the
vehicles of people without proper licenses or insurance coverage,
and training more police to enforce immigration laws in areas of
the state having the most problems.
