The 2008 Mardi Gras season in Mobile came to an end Tuesday night with a traditional parade. The Order of Myths took to the streets with its familiar emblem float: a jester chasing a skeleton, symbolizing folly chasing death around the broken column of life. Some people in the crowd were happy to pass up daytime parades in Mobile to see this one. Bianca Denton said, "We just got out here. We've been in Foley and we went to the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Parade."
Condell Huff of Mobile said, "We just came. We didn't want to brave being out all day." "We just came back out tonight," said Alex Tucker of Mobile. "We came this morning for the parade and now we came tonight for the parade." And Sue Bame of Mobile said, "I was waiting for the rain to fall, but it looks like we're going to miss it." But we did find some people that have been on their feet all the day. Jason Few of Mobile said he and his wife "got here about 10:45 and we haven't left yet. We've been anywhere from Fort Conde' all the way over to St. Louis Street, so we have family in many organizations and wouldn't trade this for the love of money." The Order of Myths was founded in 1867.
Mobile Police estimate the crowd at 116, 843 people. There were 111 adults and 24 juveniles arrested.
