New York's Times Square has a crystal ball. Mobile will have it's Moon Pie. Now Pensacola is starting a new New Year's Eve tradition with the Pelican Drop.
A team of cabinet makers constructed the center piece of Pensacola's Downtown Countdown 2008. The 1,000 pound Pelican is 13-feet-tall and 17-feet wide and will be covered with 10,000 lights.
Michael Dicks spent hours studying the local brown pelicans. He took hundreds of pictures which he used to come up with the design.
The Pelican will be perched 100-feet in the air and will drop at the stroke of midnight amidst fireworks and confetti.
