MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - A judge has ruled that man who shot and
killed his grandfather during a fishing trip along the Tensaw River
will remain in an institution for now.
Circuit Judge Robert Smith was told Monday that 28-year-old
Jason Pierce continues to exhibit aggressive behavior in
the years since he killed 71-year-old Paul Strahan.
Smith said Pierce should not be sent to jail because he was
found not guilty of his grandfather's murder by reason of insanity
or mental defect in February 2003.
He ordered that authorities notify the court before he is
released from his institutionalized mental treatment so he can be
certain jail time is avoided. Pierce shot his grandfather in the
stomach with a shotgun in 2001 and killed him in July 2002.
