The light house series of stamps continues to be a popular one for the United States Postal Service. And in 2009 two Gulf Coast light houses will be a part of that series. The Sand Island Lighthouse was first constructed in 1838 as Alabama's first and only seacoast light. According to the Alabama Light House Association it has had to be rebuilt twice, first due to erosion the second after it was destroyed in the civil war. Today the light house is owned by the residents of Dauphin Island and in need of restoration.
The Biloxi Lighthouse is the only lighthouse in the United States that stands in the middle of a four-lane highway. The lighthouse survived Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
The lighthouse series of stamps feature pantings by Toms River, New Jersey artist Howard Koslow. Click here to find out what other stamps will be a part of the 2009 commemorative stamp program.
