NEW YORK (AP) - Bargain-hunters hit the stores early today,
hoping to take advantage of drastic price cuts offered by retailers
desperate to get rid of old merchandise and boost dreary holiday
sales.
Many stores opened before 6 a.m., offering up to 75 percent off
on toys, furniture, electronics and clothing.
J.C. Penney even made wake-up calls to customers who signed up
online.
At Macy's in New York, one woman came armed with coupons and
relatives she still had to buy for. She says there are "crazy
deals" but vows she "won't overshop."
Stores looking at bleak sales numbers hope sale prices will
entice shoppers to redeem gift cards or use cash from returned
gifts to buy something new.
