WASHINGTON (AP) - A new Homeland Security review forecasts the
terror threat to the U.S. over the next five years.
Among other things, the report predicts that terrorists will try
a destructive biological attack on the U.S. during that time. The
internal assessment was obtained by The Associated Press.
The intelligence officials also say terrorists will continue
trying to evade border security to get operatives inside U.S.
territory to carry out attacks. They may pose as refugees or asylum
seekers or try to exploit the visa waiver program.
The officials are also expecting the pool of radical Islamists
within the U.S. to grow in the near future, partly because of the
ease of online recruiting.
The report predicts the cyber terror threat will also grow over
the next five years, as hacking tools become more available. The
report adds, however, that al-Qaida currently lacks the ability to
conduct large-scale attacks, such as disrupting a city's water or
power systems.
The assessment says factors driving the terror threat include
instability in the Middle East and Africa.
