Wagarville Man Shot To Death In Robbery

Update 11:00 p.m.
(Washington County, Al) December 19 - Washington County Sheriff Richard Stringer says a 22-year-old man was arrested Friday afternoon.
According to the Sheriff the man was arrested at a bus terminal in Mobile. He had purchased a ticket to a city in south Florida.
The man has been charged with murder and other charges are pending.
He is currently being held in the Washington County jail. His name is not being released at this time.
The Sheriff's deputies are also looking for another person. Sheriff Stringer says they hope to have him in custody soon.

Harris Cash Grocery in Wagarville was a hard site to miss Friday. Family and friends gathered in a time of mourning after a robbery takes the life of longtime shop owner Ray Wheat.

“You sit in there drink a coke you talk to Ray just a great person did not deserve this, he did not deserve this,” says friend Ramona Flowers. She says Wheat had owned Harris Cash Groceries on Highway 43 for years.

“He was just well liked in the community, you won't find anyone to say anything bad,” says Flowers. She says Ray's been robbed many times but he never carried a gun.

“He didn't want to hurt nobody he said it would do no good because he couldn't hurt nobody,” says Flowers. Authorities say a customer came in at about 10:15 Friday morning and found Wheat shot to death. They believe the suspects grabbed money and headed south on Highway 43. Authorities say witnesses saw two men fleeing the scene. They may have been driving a Ford Crown Victoria or a Mercury Grand Marquee that’s tan or silver in color. Authorities say one suspect was arrested Friday afternoon at the Greyhound bus terminal in Mobile.
