FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - An 83-year-old southwest Florida man
will become one of the oldest inmates in the state prison system
after he was sentenced to life for killing his wife.
A judge sentenced Joseph Rodriguez of Cape Coral on Monday for
fatally shooting Wanda Rodriguez, his wife of 48 years. A jury
convicted him of second-degree murder last month.
Rodriguez claims he is innocent in the July 2007 death. He said
that his wife committed suicide instead. But prosecutors said
evidence at the scene clearly showed that he shot her.
The Department of Corrections says Rodriguez will join 31 other
inmates who are 83 or older. The oldest is 90. That's out of a
total state prison population of nearly 100,000.
