BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Alabama's two Republican senators
appeared on two political TV talk shows to voice opposition to the
proposed bailout of three U.S. automakers.
Speaking on "Fox News Sunday," U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, the
top Republican on the Senate Banking Committee, said he would not
support the package, which over the weekend was slimmed down from
$34 billion to $15 billion.
Shelby of Tuscaloosa calls it "a bridge loan to nowhere,"
adding: "This is a down payment on many billions to come."
Sen. Jeff Sessions of Mobile, appearing on "Face the Nation"
on CBS, said the new plan is better, but he remains skeptical.
Sessions suggested the Big Three pursue reorganization under
Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
