MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama Power Co. has asked the Public
Service Commission to raise rates for residential customers by more
than 14 percent.
The utility reported to the state utility regulatory board that
it is not receiving enough money to cover its rising costs for coal
and natural gas, and it needs a rate increase.
A company spokesman says the proposed increase of 14.6 percent
would mean an extra $16.45 for a residential customer who uses
1,000 kilowatt hours per month.
The PSC will hold a public hearing on the proposed increase on
Sept. 23.
