MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - About 3,000 fans and friends of Isaac
Hayes have gathered in Memphis for the soul singer's memorial
service today.
Speaking at the service, Jesse Jackson called Hayes "a lovely
man." Al Sharpton recalled Hayes as a man who never lost his
"authenticity."
Congressman Steve Cohen, who represents the area, suggested
Memphis rename its airport Isaac Hayes International.
Richard Roundtree, who starred in the 1971 movie "Shaft," also
attended the service. Hayes penned and performed the theme song
from the movie. It won him both Academy and Grammy awards. Hayes
was also a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He appeared in
a number of films and provided the voice for the character Chef in
the TV comedy series "South Park."
The 65-year-old Hayes died August 10th after being found
unconscious at his Memphis home. His doctor listed the cause of
death as a stroke.
