A warm, non-stop downpour is the first thing greeting students at E.R. Dickson Elementary students. Some scurry inside, others use backpacks like their own little umbrella. Amid the mess of water and wee ones is Special Education Aid Paula Singletary. She says it's a tough way to start the school day.
“We were opening to avoid this especially for carpool but we do what we can,” says Singletary. After getting dried off and taking their seats, students sharpen their pencils and perk up their ears in Chris Baker's 5th grade class.
“Go over a lot of rules, procedures, get excited about learning, that's the toughest part of this job is to get them excited about learning and that's up to me,” says teacher Chris Baker. This is baker's 4th year teaching. He says his challenge is getting these kids back in the learning mode.
“It feels great, very excited worked all weekend and last night trying to get ready and happy to have all the kids in this morning,” says Baker. The students aren't the only ones with butterflies in their stomach; it's their principal's first day too
“I am very nervous today but I know it's going to come off with great success but right now I’m very nervous,” says Principal Missy Nolan.
