HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A federal jury in Huntsville has
convicted a transgender woman of robbing the Alabama Credit Union
in Decatur.
Jurors on Tuesday found Jimmy Maurice Lewis II, 26, guilty of
federal bank robbery for the November 2007 heist. The trial began
Monday.
Prosecutors believe Lewis, a native of Ashford, wanted to use
the $9,600 in stolen money to finance a complete sex-change
operation.
Born a man, Lewis already had breast implant surgery, and court
documents filed by prosecutors referred to Lewis both as a man and
a woman. The robber entered the credit union wearing a dress and
carrying a purse, and authorities initially said a woman was
responsible for the crime.
Lewis also awaits trial for bank robberies in Texas and
Tennessee.
Prosecutors said said Lewis will be sentenced Dec. 11. He faces
up to 20 years in prison.
