For the second time in as many days, the Gulf of Mexico has claimed the life of a swimmer. Orange Beach Police Chief Greg Duck tells News 5 a swimmer drowned Monday night near the jetty's in Perdido Pass (Alabama Point). The victim's name hasn't been released.
Less than an hour after the drowning, lifeguards in Orange Beach posted double-red flags at all public beaches. A double-red flag means the Gulf of Mexico is off-limits to swimmers. Red flags had been flying since Sunday when rough surf conditions and dangerous rip currents were reported along Pleasure Island.
On Sunday, a Louisiana man drowned in Perdido Key, Florida, after trying to rescue a swimmer in distress. Double-red flags could fly for the next 24 hours. Lifeguards say people caught swimming in the Gulf of Mexico under a double-red flag could be fined or arrested by police.
