Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman is in a hospital in Memphis, Tennessee after being injured in a car accident near his home in Mississippi.
Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Sergeant Ben Williams says Freeman was driving a 1997 Nissan Maxima that belonged to Demaris
Meyer when the car left Mississippi Highway 32 in Tallahatchie County and flipped several times. The accident occurred about 11:30 p.m. last night (Sunday).
Freeman was air lifted to the Regional Medical Center. Spokeswoman Kathy Stringer says the 71-year-old Freeman is in serious condition. Meyer was also in the car and was taken to the same hospital. Her condition was not immediately available.
The hospital, commonly known as The Med, is an acute-care teaching facility that serves patients within 150 miles of Memphis.
Clay McFerrin, editor of the weekly Sun Sentinel in Charleston, says he arrived on the scene of the accident soon after it happened about four miles west of Charleston, not far from where Freeman owns a home with his wife Myrna.
The WREG-TV Web site reports Freeman may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
Freeman won an Oscar for his role in "Million Dollar Baby" and is currently costarring in "Dark Knight." He was born in Memphis but spent much of his childhood in the Mississippi Delta. He is a co-owner of the Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale.
