BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala. (AP) - The Bayou La Batre city council has
approved an $8.6 million contract with a Mobile-based company to
build 100 modular houses for families left homeless by Hurricane
Katrina.
The council voted 4-0 to hire The Mitchell Company Inc., while
turning down an $8.9 million bid from Birmingham-based Park Lane
Construction Inc.
The homes will be built in two subdivisions, called Safe Harbor
Landing and Safe Harbor Estates. The federally funded project is
part of a $400 million Federal Emergency Management Agency program
aimed at finding better housing options after disasters.
City officials said they expect the first 30 homes to be ready
for eligible families by the end of June.
