Checkpoint Leads To Police Shooting

Armed man speeds away from checkpoint, is shot by Mobile Police after threatening an officer with a gun

A Mobile Police safety checkpoint resulted in a shooting early Saturday evening.
According to police, a man sped away after coming up on a checkpoint on Michigan Avenue and Eagle Drive.
Officers gave chase for several blocks until the driver crashed his car and tried to run away.
The man got into a scuffle with officer Fred Freeman and reportedly threatened him with a handgun.
The suspect, later identified as 28 year old William Murphy the third of Mobile, was then shot by the officer.
He was taken to the USA Medical Center for treatment, where he is reported to be in fair condition.
According to investigators, the suspect had a large quantity of marijuana and a prison ID on him.
He is now charged with trafficking of cannabis, and felony possession of a firearm.
