MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - State environmental officials have voted
to approve stricter requirements for levels of certain pollutants
in Alabama waterways.
The Alabama Environmental Commission oversees the Alabama
Department of Environmental Management. The commissioners voted 3-1
to lower the acceptable level of 71 pollutants in Alabama
waterways.
Commissioner Sam Wainwright cast the lone dissenting vote at the
meeting Friday. Wainwright said he is concerned that the exclusion
of arsenic from the more stringent requirements leaves the
department open to litigation.
State environmental groups have been pushing for the tighter
requirements, which they say will reduce the risk of harmful health
effects of some of the pollutants.
