Where is Mike Kopf? The U-S Coast Guard, Alabama Marine Police, Orange Beach Police Department and dozens of volunteers spent Monday searching the waters around Ono Island for Kopf. Kopf was last seen around noon Sunday at the Ono Island boat launch.
"It's not looking good," says Sgt. Jody Kelley with the Alabama Marine Police. "His boat was found drifting in Old River and his truck was still running in the parking lot. We found some of his clothes on a nearby pier and his sunglasses. It looks like he had some kind of boating accident and tried to jump off the pier to retrieve his drifting boat."
A K-9 trained in tracking missing persons caught Kopf's scent early Monday morning. Dozens of search and rescue volunteers are looking for Kopf in an area right off the boat launch.
"The family is doing okay," says Dr. Joe Law, a family friend. "They understand things don't look well and they're doing the best they can."
"The family has accepted the fact that he's no longer with them," says Kelley. "There's always outside hope, but it's not likely he's alive."
Kelley says the search for Kopf has now become a recovery mission. Crews will be back out on the water Tuesday morning.
