LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) - Florida's longest-serving teacher has
died.
Hazel Haley taught English for 69 years before she retired from
Lakeland High School two years ago. She died Monday at age 91.
Haley was certified by the state to teach in 1937, the same year
she graduated from Florida Southern College with a bachelor's
degree in English. Except for two brief teaching assignments, she
spent her entire career at Lakeland High. One of the buildings
there now bears her name.
The beloved Haley taught two and sometimes three generations of
some local families. Her students included former Gov. Lawton
Chiles.
CBS News' Steve Hartman featured Haley two years ago in an Assignment America story.
