WASHINGTON (AP) - Different cultures may need different
treatments for children with dyslexia.
Specifically, the learning disability seems to affect different
parts of children's brains depending on whether they read English
or Chinese.
That's according to a study from a Hong Kong University
professor who says the finding yields new clues into the cause of
dyslexia.
Different skills are needed to read an alphabetic language like
English versus the symbols used to represent words in Chinese.
The study, reported in today's online edition of Proceedings of
the National Academy of Sciences, means therapists may need to find
different methods to treat dyslexic children from different
cultures.
