Crane Crash

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The second crane accident in a little
over a week is once again raising the question of whether the state
should regulate constructions cranes and their operators.
There were no serious injuries in today's incident. But two
construction workers were killed and five others were injured when
a crane collapsed at a high-rise condominium site last week.
One of the associations that represents Florida construction
companies says there should be some type of regulation of
construction cranes.
Associated Builders and Contractors says it supports a measure
that would require the state certification of cranes so that they
meet national standards. The proposed legislation would also would
require crane operators to be certified.
Backers of the proposal says crane operators need to have a good
understanding of the machines and their limits.
The bill would give the state sole authority over their
regulation.
