The Escambia County Sheriff's Office put a couple behind bars Friday for trying to sell a two-month-old baby for $30 dollars.
The Sheriff's office says 25-year-old Maghen Duvala and her boyfriend 23-year-old Robert Ellingson were arrested just before 5 o'clock Friday afternoon. Deputies say the couple tried to sell Duvala's 2-month-old baby to a couple of teenagers in a shopping center parking lot off Davis Highway."When we got to the parking lot where the teens challenge group was, we were told that this couple had driven up in an SUV and was trying to sell a baby to them for $30 dollars,"Said Glenn Austin,Escambia County Sheriff's Office.
"At first glance they didn't appear like they were you know.. caring for a young child, a very young child at all, so that kind of threw off a red flag there," Said Vincent Garcia, Teen Challenge Ministries.
Members of Teen Challenge Ministries say they were holding a carwash fundraiser in the parking lot when the couple pulled up and offered them beer, then a baby. "It didn't sit right as I was walking away, in my heart I wanted to think that for sure that they were definitely kidding," Said Garcia.
Authorities say joke or not, the couple is now facing serious charges, after the Sheriff's Office received several calls that the couple tried to sell the baby earlier during the day at a Whitney Bank parking lot across the street.
"He's facing two child neglect charges because he offered to sell the baby twice to two different people and she's charged with one count of child neglect, because she offered it once, " Said Austin.
The Sheriff's Office says the couple will also face additional charges from Pensacola Police for the first attempt to sell the baby.
Authorities say the two-month-old is now in care of The Division of Children and Families.
