Precious Carter could spend Christmas without her one-year old son. The Escambia County Sheriff's Office arrested the Pensacola mother and charged her with child neglect. Investigators say Carter's baby swallowed cocaine.
"She told us she had no idea how it happened," says Escambia County Sheriff's spokesman Glenn Austin. "She at first told us the child had swollowed rat poison because there was poison left out in the apartment. But a doctor at Sacred Heart Hospital found cocaine in the baby's system."
Carter told authorities she had several guests in her home while she was asleep.
"She says one of the friends might have left some cocaine around the house," says Austin. "But regardless, the mother is responsible for the child and somehow, the baby ate cocaine."
The baby is okay and has been placed with another family member. Carter has two other children. They, too, could miss Christmas with their mother.
