The women at the McKemie Place shelter have been busy preparing stockings full of hygiene products and hand made afghans for the elderly. They have 300 blankets and more than 250 stockings. Jacqueline Garner says she’s happy to help out.
“Well I know it's a lot of people in the nursing home that don't have any family,” says the Mobile homeless woman. “It make me feel good to be able to give something to keep warm because it's kind of cold out there.” The women went to seven different nursing homes Wednesday dropping off wrapped tidings of joy.
The gifts were greeted with surprise and emotion. One woman was so overcome by joy she burst out into tears.
McKemie Place opened in March. Since then, organizers say they’ve helped more than 260 women get off the street.
“The ladies enjoy doing volunteer work because they're giving back to the community that has helped them,” says Staff Manager Angelia Lewis. “So what we do is all the ladies that is homeless we come together and decide on different programs we can do each month.”
