OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - A woman who knew him says the man believed
responsible for a deadly rampage today at an Omaha, Nebraska, mall
was troubled.
A law enforcement official says 20-year old Robert Hawkins died
of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the mall where he killed eight
people and wounded five others. Witnesses say the gunman fired down
from a third-floor balcony.
The woman who owns the home where Hawkins lived described him as
a "lost pound puppy that nobody wanted." She says Hawkins was
fired from his job at a McDonald's this week and had recently
broken up with his girlfriend.
Police used a bomb robot to access a vehicle left in the mall
parking lot that is believed to have belonged to Hawkins. Officers
had seen some wires under some clothing, but no bomb was found.
