ATLANTA (AP) - For the first time in 14 years, the nation's teen
birth rate is on the rise.
The government says it jumped by three percent from 2005 to
2006.
A co-author of the report at the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention says, "It took us by surprise."
The report also finds that births to unmarried mothers hit a new
high. And, the overall birth rate is at its highest level since
1971.
For every 1,000 females between the ages of 15 and 19, there
were 41.9 live births -- up from 40.5 a year earlier.
