ATLANTA (AP) - The governors of Alabama, Georgia and Florida
have postponed a meeting to try to reach a long-term agreement to
share water from the Appalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river
systems.
The meeting had been scheduled for next Monday in Tallahassee,
but was postponed to December 17th due to scheduling conflicts,
according to Florida Governor Charlie Crist's office.
The three states have been fighting over the region's water
resources for the better part of two decades. The dispute has
intensified by drought.
The White House recently brokered a temporary arrangement under
which the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would hold more water in
north Georgia's Lake Lanier while the states try to broker a longer
agreement. This month's meeting is expected to be a key step in
hashing out a permanent pact.
