Florida wildlife officials are going to consider
reclassifying manatees as a "threatened" species instead of an
endangered one.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is set to
take the controversial vote in Key Largo tomorrow.
Florida biologists say manatees can now be downgraded to
"threatened" because their numbers are increasing and the
definition of "endangered" has changed.
Governor Charlie Crist says he hopes the commission will vote to
protect manatees.
