A black teenager charged in the beating of a
white classmate in Louisiana has reached a deal with prosecutors
that may allow him to get out of jail in about eight months.
Mychal Bell originally was charged as an adult with attempted
murder in the beating of Justin Barker last December. A jury
convicted him of aggravated second-degree battery, but that verdict
was thrown out by an appeals court.
Under the deal, Bell has agreed to plead guilty to a juvenile
charge of second-degree battery in return for an 18 month sentence
with credit for ten months already served.
Bell is one of a group of teens who came to be known as the
"Jena (JEE'-nuh) Six" as word spread of their arrests in the
case.
