Problems at Ala. VA homes targeted, director at one home resigns

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The state is working with a South
Carolina-based company to address problems that have been found at
three of Alabama's veterans homes.
They also said today that methods to prevent residents from
leaving unannounced have been improved.
The effort follows this week's resignation of the director at a
Bay Minette home where a resident slipped out and was found in a
wheelchair alongside a busy four-lane highway.
The William F. Green home is also where inspectors said
deficient practices were involved in the death of two residents.
Robert Graham is a regional director for H-M-R Governmental
Services, Incorporated but is serving as the interim director at
William F. Green after David Grimes resigned Monday.
He said the resignation was effective immediately and was not
related to recent problems.
H-M-R received a contract in June 2004 to operate the state VA
department's three veteran's homes.
