Ala. Lawmakers Working on Immigration Law Changes

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama legislative leaders say a bill will be ready in a couple of weeks that will make changes to the state's tough immigration law.

House Majority Leader Micky Hammon, who sponsored the immigration bill in his chamber, says the changes take into account objections raised by religious leaders and law enforcement. Hammon says the bill will not make major changes and is not aimed at softening the law.

Gov. Robert Bentley did not mention the immigration law in his "State of the State" address Tuesday but says he is committed to making some changes.

Bentley says he is working with legislative leaders on making changes to the legislation, which supporters and opponents have called the toughest crackdown in the country on illegal immigrants.
