Pumpkin chucking competitions, formal and informal, exist throughout the United States in the autumn, and often occur when pumpkins are harvested.
The European Championship is held in Bikschote, Belgium each year since 2004.
The winner broke the world record and hurled his pumpkin over a distance of 2381 feet.
For the purpose of the championship the organization provided a field of just over 21000 feet but it appeared not to be satisfactory. The winning team had to search for its pumpkin in the corn field a village farther down!
The pumpkin needs to be sent hurling at a speed nearing 250 mph.
The American champion was there too. It took three weeks to transport his catapult by boat.
At the end of the competition the participants tried to hit a driving car.
