Best Buy overcharged customers in Mississippi, Florida and eight other states for converter boxes and is now mailing refunds.
According to a letter included with refund checks, Best Buy normally applies the DTV coupon after taxes have been added to the total. But Mississippi, Florida and the other states ruled the $40 coupon should be deducted from price before taxes are added.
Best Buy is now sending checks for the difference to customers in those states.
The amount of the checks will vary based on two factors - how much the converter box cost and how much the tax is in your area.
The average DTV converter boxes cost $60. If you factor in an 8% tax, Best Buy charged $24.80 ($60 + $4.80 in taxes - $40 coupon). But they should have only charged $21.60 ($60 Box - $40 coupon + $1.60 in taxes). In this scenario, customers would get a refund of $3.20.
