WASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate is expected to approve $2 billion to keep the "cash for clunkers" program running.
Extending the government's incentive plan would give car shoppers until Labor Day to trade in their gas-guzzlers and get a rebate up to $4,500. Otherwise, the Obama administration has said the program would go broke by tomorrow.
Today, the Senate may consider some changes to the bill, which passed the House last week. But any changes would require another House vote.
Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa is among those who argue that the bill does little to help working families. He wants the vouchers limited to people earning less than $50,000 a year or joint filers earning under $75,000.
Car companies credit the clunkers program with driving up sales.
