TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A new report concludes the federal
government's stimulus checks are going right into people's gas
tanks.

The Florida Public Interest Research Group reports the average
American family has spent more than $1,500 on gas since President
Bush signed the tax rebates into law in February.

Florida PIRG is calling on Congress to pass a bill that would
expand public transportation around the country.

The U.S. House of Representatives is considering a proposal that
would give 1.7 billion dollars to public transit agencies to reduce
fares and expand services.

If Congress approves the "Saving Energy through Transportation
Act," it's estimated the city of Miami would receive nearly 37
million dollars to improve its public transportation.
